beyerdynamic | M 160 Dynamic Double-Ribbon Microphone (Hypercardioid) - Product Presentation
Description
The beyerdynamic M 160 dynamic double-ribbon microphone is designed for studio and live recording applications that require smooth transient response, controlled directional capture and the natural tonal character ribbon microphones are known for. Built around a unique dual-ribbon transducer design, the M 160 combines warm midrange detail, balanced high-frequency response and precise low-end reproduction with a hypercardioid polar pattern rarely found in ribbon microphones. Its focused pickup characteristics help reduce room bleed and unwanted stage noise while maintaining the smooth, natural response engineers rely on for guitar cabinets, drum overheads, brass instruments, acoustic guitars and broadcast voice applications. Compact dimensions, durable construction and handmade German craftsmanship have helped establish the M 160 as a longtime studio and live sound standard across professional recording environments.
Dual-Ribbon Design With Hypercardioid Control
The M 160 uses two low-mass ribbon elements paired with a hypercardioid pickup pattern to deliver more focused source capture than many traditional ribbon microphone designs. This controlled directional response helps improve separation during studio tracking and live recording applications while preserving the smooth transient handling and natural top-end character associated with ribbon microphones. The microphone’s detailed impulse response and balanced tonal presentation make it especially effective for high-SPL guitar cabinets, cymbals, percussion and brass instruments where sharp transients and upper-frequency harshness can become difficult to manage with other microphone types.
Smooth Ribbon Response for Recording Applications
The M 160’s lightweight double-ribbon assembly provides fast transient response and detailed reproduction across a wide range of recording sources without excessive tonal coloration. Its compact housing also allows easier placement around crowded drum kits, guitar cabinets and ensemble recording setups where larger ribbon microphones can be more difficult to position. In addition to studio instruments, the microphone is frequently used for orchestral recording, broadcast applications and M/S stereo recording when paired with the beyerdynamic M 130 ribbon microphone. Handmade in Germany using carefully matched ribbon elements and durable internal components, the M 160 is built for dependable long-term use across professional recording and live production environments.
Professional Ribbon Microphone for Studio and Live Sound
The beyerdynamic M 160 double-ribbon microphone combines smooth ribbon response, focused hypercardioid isolation and compact studio-friendly construction in a professional microphone designed for demanding recording and live sound applications. Its natural transient handling, balanced tonal character and controlled off-axis performance make the M 160 well suited for engineers, producers and musicians who want the warmth and detail of a ribbon microphone with greater directional control than many traditional ribbon designs. For studios seeking a versatile ribbon microphone capable of handling everything from guitar amplifiers and drum overheads to orchestral recording and broadcast voice work, the M 160 remains one of the most distinctive ribbon microphone designs in professional audio.
