Description
Start with transparent capture, then decide how much analog personality the track needs. The Cranborne Audio Camden 500 preamp combines a custom, fully discrete transformerless topology with variable Mojo saturation, giving engineers a choice between exceptionally clean amplification and deliberately colored analog tone from the same module. Its microphone input provides 8–68dB of gain while maintaining extremely low noise, distortion and phase shift throughout the gain range, with EIN below -129.5dBu and an extended response reaching beyond 200kHz at all gain settings. Mic, line and Hi-Z operation makes the module equally useful for microphones, instruments and line-level sources, while an 80Hz high-pass filter provides straightforward low-frequency control. When transparency isn't the goal, Thump and Cream modes introduce two distinctly different flavors of harmonic saturation without permanently imposing that character on every recording.
Transparent Gain Preserves the Source at Every Level
Unlike preamp designs whose response changes significantly as gain increases, this module is engineered to maintain linear frequency and phase behavior throughout its operating range. Phase shift stays below 2.25° from 20Hz–20kHz at 40dB of gain and reaches less than 4° at maximum gain, helping preserve fast transients and timing across the frequency spectrum. Extremely low THD+N further minimizes unintended coloration, while the extended bandwidth supports accurate high-frequency detail. The result is a clean front end that lets the microphone, instrument and performance establish the tone before intentional processing is added.
Thump and Cream Add Two Flavors of Mojo
When a source needs more personality, the Camden 500's Mojo circuit provides variable analog saturation through two discrete styles. Thump adds low-frequency harmonics from roughly 160Hz into the sub-bass range, adding perceived weight to kick, bass and other low-end sources without simply boosting their fundamental frequencies. Cream adds odd- and even-order harmonics while dynamically smoothing the low mids and applying transformer-like transient taming that can help vocals, guitars, keys and other sources settle into a mix. The amount of Mojo can be dialed from subtle enhancement to exaggerated coloration or bypassed entirely for the preamp's pristine base response.
Mic, Line and Hi-Z Inputs Expand Studio Flexibility
Separate operating ranges optimize the preamp for different sources, providing up to 68dB of microphone gain, 60dB for line signals and 63dB for Hi-Z instruments. Line-level tracks from a DAW can also be routed back through the module, allowing Thump or Cream to add analog saturation to previously recorded stems, virtual instruments and mixes. An RGB signal-level LED with clip indication simplifies gain monitoring, while the dedicated 48V status LED shows when phantom power is charging, dissipating or fully ready. Designed and engineered in the UK, the Cranborne Audio Camden 500 provides a flexible single-slot solution for engineers who want transparent capture, purposeful analog coloration and reamping capability from the same 500 Series preamp.
