Description
Build the studio around the analog gear you want to use instead of working around the limitations of a conventional interface. The Cranborne Audio 500R8 combines a 28-in/30-out USB 2.0 audio interface with an eight-slot 500 Series rack, high-performance A/D-D/A conversion, monitor control, analog summing and zero-latency artist monitoring in a single 4U centerpiece. Each 500 Series slot can host a preamp, EQ, compressor or other compatible module, creating a customizable analog front end that records directly into the DAW. The 500R8 delivers 121dB A-weighted dynamic range with +24dBu maximum I/O levels and a master reference-quality internal clock with less than 0.5 picoseconds of jitter. Add 16-in/16-out ADAT at 44.1/48kHz, S/PDIF, MIDI, Word Clock and C.A.S.T. connectivity, and the 500R8 provides a comprehensive foundation for professional and home studios built around both hardware and software.
Eight 500 Series Slots Build Your Analog Sound
Eight high-current slots let engineers choose the analog character that best suits each session, whether that means loading the rack with vintage-style preamps for drums, clean preamps for acoustic sources or combinations of preamps, EQs and compressors to create custom channel strips. Each slot supplies 250mA per rail and provides XLR input and line output connections plus a pre-A/D converter TRS insert. Individual source switches can also route analog, USB or C.A.S.T. signals through installed modules, while bypass switches keep channels operational when no module is present. During mixing, USB playback from the DAW can be sent through the hardware and recorded back into the session, effectively turning a collection of 500 Series processors into hands-on analog processing paths.
Reference-Class Conversion Connects Hardware and Software
High-performance A/D-D/A conversion captures the character of the analog signal path while maintaining the detail needed for recording and mixing. The interface provides 121dB A-weighted converter dynamic range and THD+N below 0.00032% under specified A/D test conditions, supported by low-jitter internal clocking at sample rates from 44.1–192kHz. Beyond its primary USB connection, digital expansion includes up to 16 channels of ADAT I/O at 44.1/48kHz and eight channels at 88.2/96kHz, along with S/PDIF, 5-pin MIDI and BNC Word Clock I/O. External synchronization can come from Word Clock, S/PDIF or ADAT, giving the system flexibility when joining larger studio configurations.
Analog Summing Brings Hardware Character Into the Mix
An 8-into-2 analog summing mixer sits after the 500 Series slots, allowing each channel to pass through installed processing before reaching dedicated level and pan controls. This makes it possible to introduce hardware saturation, EQ, compression or other processing before combining the channels into a stereo analog mix. With +26.5dBu of summing headroom and a dedicated converter, the stereo result can be recorded directly back into the DAW through USB inputs 9/10. A C.A.S.T. link can also combine the summing architecture with a Cranborne Audio 500ADAT to create a larger 16-into-2 analog workflow.
Monitor Control and Artist Mixing Streamline Sessions
Integrated monitor control handles two sets of studio speakers with dedicated A/B switching, Mono, Mute and a -12dB Dim function, while a 28-segment peak meter provides clear visual level feedback. A dedicated XLR talkback input includes phantom power, push-to-talk operation and automatic routing to connected headphone and C.A.S.T. destinations for communication with performers. For cue mixes, the high-headroom analog mixer can blend live inputs with discrete DAW returns without routing through a software mixer, providing zero-latency monitoring. Two high-power headphone outputs add independent level and blend controls, with ample output for a broad range of studio headphones.
C.A.S.T. Distributes Analog Audio Throughout the Studio
Four C.A.S.T. inputs extend the analog workflow beyond the rack by transporting four channels of balanced audio over standard shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable. Compatible breakout devices such as the N22 and N22H can relocate microphone and line connections to a live room, vocal booth or other recording space while returning the artist mix over the same cable. C.A.S.T. remains completely analog and requires no network configuration, with supported runs up to 100 meters. Designed and engineered in the UK, each 500R8 is extensively tested before shipping. The Cranborne Audio 500R8 brings recording, analog processing, digital connectivity, monitoring and studio distribution together in one configurable system built to serve as the centerpiece of a hybrid studio.
